Les nouveaux vêtements de l’empereur
Plastic waste outfits and accessories
Tambacounda/Senegal 2020
Presented within the Festival international de l’ Union of Tambacounda in cooperation with the Department of Cultural Affairs of Munich
The starting point of my Senegal project les nouveaux vêtements de l’empereur was the annual Festival international de l’ Union of Tambacounda, to which I was invited in February 2020 by the initiators. The theme of the festival L’environnement – sa
préservation e sa valorisation (English: the environment – its preservation and its valorisation) was chosen deliberately to draw attention to the ever growing waste problem in Senegal. The knitted, crocheted or assemblage outfits and accessories made of plastic waste that I created on the occasion of the festival were worn on stage by the initiator of the festival, the rapper Negger Dou and other performers.
My Art campaign was intended to clarify that plastic can become an aesthetic resource from “rubbish carpets” in the streets through artistic practice.
